I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!
We can thank former President Ronald Reagan for the Presidential Proclamation designating July as National Ice Cream Month. On Average we consume about 4.5 gallons of ice cream each year. What does this mean for the trucking industry?
In Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota alone nearly 4.7 billion gallons of milk are transported using special trailers that keep the milk at the right temperature throughout its journey from farm to the processing plant. After pasteurization, cooling, and packaging nearly 1.4 billion gallons of ice cream are then transported via refrigerated (reefer) trailer to different stores and ice cream shops all over the United States.
The top 4 ice cream flavors in the U.S. are as follows:
-14% of Americans claim chocolate to be their favorite flavor
-Chocolate ice cream was created in Italy in 1693
-13% of Americans claim Vanilla as their favorite flavor
-Vanilla was created by Thomas Jefferson in America in 1780
- Butter Pecan
-11% of Americans stand behind Butter Pecan as their favorite flavor
-Butter pecan was spawned in Southern USA in 1790
- Cookies n Crème-
-8% of Americans declare Cookies n crème as their favorite
-Cookies n Crème was created by accident in the Dairy Lab of South Dakota State University in 1979
As you can clearly see the original flavors are still topping the charts, but if you’re feeling froggy try jumping into one of these more exotic flavors (not a joke these actually exist):
- Margarita Pizza (Minnesota)
- Dill Pickle (North Dakota)
- Hearty Breakfast- French toast, bacon, and a splash of whiskey (Wisconsin)
- Roasted Beets with Goat Cheese (wild card from Kansas)
Whether you prefer the steadfast tried and true flavors of vanilla and chocolate, or you’re more the adventurous type who will try anything once. Remember the truckers that transported this delicious desert while you indulge on a scoop or cone of your favorite flavor this month. Happy National Ice Cream Month!
